Ready-Set-Stretch
As in every sport, a good round of golf depends on good preparation and good conditioning. And for greater distance on the course, flexibility might be the key to a longer drive.

In a 1998 study, Doreen Puglisi, exercise physiologist, examined the effects that flexibility can have on clubhead speed. An 8-week study with 16 recreational golfers, aged 45 through 82, with a mean handicap of 18, was conducted. There was an initial pre-test carried out that measured joint flexibility in the shoulder, hip and trunk rotation for each participant. Clubhead speed was also measured.

Flexibility exercises were conducted in 45-minute sessions, three times a week for the duration of the study. The muscles stretched were the shoulder muscles, chest and back muscles, and the muscles that act upon the hip joint.

Immediately following the 8-week flexibility program, a post-test was done to measure joint flexibility and clubhead speed. Results were impressive: shoulder range of motion increased an average of 8.5%; hip flexibility showed a 7% gain; trunk rotation (right and left) was the most improved, 23% and 25% respectively. Most significantly, the increase in flexibility brought about a mean increase in clubhead speed of 5.56 miles per hour, which translates into 10 to 12 yards additional ball carry.

How do strong abdominal muscles lead to longer shots?

Strong abdominal muscles help contribute to more power and greater consistency. If you have weak core muscles (abdominal & low back) it will be difficult to maintain your posture as you rotate through the swing. Losing your posture leads to inconsistency and lack of rotation, which can limit power generated.

The subjects performed torso-specific exercises three times per week for six weeks. There was a 52% increase in abdominal strength. Clubhead speed increased up to 9 miles per hour; that's a 21-yard increase in driving distance!
